Winter Break
Over the holidays, Jake and I took a good two weeks off and had a REAL winter break for the first time in years. Like, for the first time since Jake was in high school and since I was in college... or maybe grad school (admittedly, I've probably enjoyed more breaks over the years than he has :) ). It had been a LONG time, my friends. With Jake getting laid off, and with my work schedule operating around the university schedule, we decided to take advantage of the time presented to us.
We spent most of that time at my parents' house in Southern Oregon, leaving just for a couple of days for our 30th birthday getaway to Bend. The best part? We got a white Christmas for the first time in years! There was ZERO snow last year, and the year before that, we got tons of snow on 2 different occasions in our town, but none at my parents' for the holidays (which is super unusual, given where we each live). We were so excited for Lyla's first snow experience! My mom went out and bought her the cutest and most hilarious pink snowsuit (which she still likes to wear around the house). She was the sweetest marshmallow girl! It's been a VERY wet winter in the valley, and while we so desperately need the rain, we're all getting tired of being cooped up. It was so nice to be able to get outside so much in the very cold, but mostly sunny weather.
Our Bend birthday getaway was another highlight. I had never been away from Lyla overnight before, so I was a little nervous... but really excited to spend 48 hours in my favorite place with my favorite person. We went out to dinner at 7 PM, got to eat our food while it was still hot, and didn't have to worry about how to seat a toddler at a bar height table. And we slept-in. We SLEPT IN! Till 9 AM. It was glorious. We had been at my parents' house for almost a week before Jake and I left, so Lyla was really settled in and very happy to be at Nonnie and Papa's. I think she only noticed we were missing a couple of times :). It was a great time for Jake and I to steal some time for ourselves and for my parents to get lots of quality time with our girl--win-win all around!
